Washingtonia robusta
Mexican Fan Palm
Common Name: Mexican Fan Palm
Family: Arecaceae
Zone: 8-10
Average Size: 60-80’H x 15’W
Identification:
  • Solitary, slender trunk with rounded crown
  • Fan-shaped leaf, costapalmate, 3-5 feet wide
  • White filaments on margin of young leaf
  • Prominent spines on reddish petiole
  • Dead leaf persist on trunk
  • Trunk covered with dense, brown thatch; bare near the base
Notes: Native to Southern California and Baja Mexico the Mexican Fan Palm thrives in full sun and well drained soils. Many times it is used as a replacement for Sabal palmetto because it does not seed freely and sheds less debris. Sometimes referred to as the “petticoat palm”, the Mexican Fan Palm may appear shaggy and unkempt due to the persistent dead leaves. Pruning improves appearance, but becomes difficult as the palm grows.
