Quercus michauxii
Swamp Chestnut Oak
Common Name: Basket Oak or Swamp Chestnut Oak
Family: Fagaceae
Zone: 4 - 9
Average Size: 60' H x 40' W
Identification:
  • Simple leaf, ovate; each vein ending in a rounded-tooth; margin serrated
  • Large, bright brown acorns, 1/2 inch in diameter
  • Shaggy, ash-gray bark; resembles Q. alba
Notes: A long-lived native oak, found in bottomlands and river bottoms. Known for its outstanding autumn color, the Cow Oak is highly prized, but not commonly available in the nursery industry due to its slow growth rate. Great volumes of leaf fall in autumn and make this species a maintenance concern
