Identification:
  • Simple leaf, 4-6 inches long, short, pointed apex
  • In late summer through winter, large, prominent floral buds, pubescent
  • Saucer-shaped flowers, purple to pink in late winter
  • Smooth gray bark, generally multiple trunks
Notes: Interspecific hybrid of M. liliflora and M. denudata, both Asian species. This deciduous magnolia is a popular small tree in the Southeast. The large pink flowers appear in the late winter before the foliage. Many named cultivars available.
