Identification:
  • Simple leaf; oval, tapering toward end
  • leaves leathery, glossy green on top; brown pubescence below; evergreen
  • Large white flowers, 6-8 inches; blooming April to June; fragrant
  • Cone-like fruit; shiny red seeds attached by a thread-like filament in autumn
Notes: A stately symbol of the South, the Southern Magnolia is found in moist, fertile soils throughout the region. In open spaces, the Southern Magnolia will form a dense canopy, branched low to the ground, appearing as a large shrub. In the urban landscape, the species is usually limbed to form a trunk. The large, leathery leaves fall throughout the year and may become a maintenance concern
