Notes: The Ginkgo is considered by some to be a living fossil. The fossil record dates this unusual gymnosperm to be over 100 million years ago. Found growing native only in China, Ginkgo is widely planted today as a street and park tree for its brilliant yellow autumn color. Female trees produce an orange-yellow fruit that is foul smelling and may be considered a maintenance problem as it rots on the ground. Male forms are preferred with most named selections being male. |
