Identification:
- Opposite arrangement of stems and leaves
- Simple leaf, 3-5 lobed leaves, white pubescence beneath, petiole usually red
- Smooth gray branches and bark
- Small clusters of red flowers in late winter before foliage
- Showy red to pink samara on female trees following flowering

| Notes: The native variety of red maple is much better adapted to climate of the gulf south than it's northern cousin (Acer rubrum). Samaras are larger and showier compared to the species. Unfortunately, fall color is variable among seedlings and few if any selections have been made |
